Is Salem Lutheran School (SLS) Accreditated?

Yes.  SLS is accreditated by Missouri Non-public Schools Association and the National Lutheran Schools Association. 

How is tuition handled?

 We know that families who make the commitment to send their children to SLS are making sacrifices to do so.  We try to help with the costs of tuition and fees as much as possible.  For more information on financial aid click here.

Where do Salem graduates go to high school?

Over 60% of our graduates go on to attend Lutheran High School South.  Many form continue and strengthen their frienships there.  Other high schools attended are Affton, Bayless and Mehlville. 

 

Does SLS offer any groups or support for parents?

YES.  Our Parents and Teachers for Salem (PATS) group offers many programs throughout the year.  Trunk or Treat, Family Bingo and our school picnic are just a few examples.

Is there a dress code?

Yes.  Students may wear solid colored collared shirts with blue, black, or khaki colored shorts or pants.  Belts are required and shirts are to be tucked in.  For a more detailed explanation of the dress code click here.

 What extra curricular opportunities does Salem Lutheran School offer?

There are many extra curricular opportunities for students to find and develop their God-given abilities.  Students in grades 5-8 are able to play basketball, volleyball and track.   Cross country running is available to students in grades one through eight.  Other offerings are karate, dance, children’s summer theater and scouts.

 Are gym uniforms required?

 Yes for students in grades 4-8.  The gym uniforms consists of plain, black athletic shorts and a Salem Lutheran School gym shirt, which available for purchase in the school office.

 Is there physical education, music and art instruction?

Yes.  SLS employs part time PE, music and art teachers.  Stduents have PE twice a week.  Music classes are offered to Kindergarten through 6th grade twice a week.  In 7th and 8th grade students may participate in handbells or vocal choir.  Band is also offered to all students in grades 5th-8th.  Art is once a week in grades 3-6 and an option for the 7th and 8th graders to take twice a week.  

 Do you have to be Lutheran?

 No.  Our school is open to all who seek a quality, Christ-centered education.   

What are the hours of school?

 Doors open at 8:00 and the school day starts at 8:15.  Dismissal is at 3:15. 

Is there an extended care program?

 Yes.  Before school is available starting at 6:30 AM and after school care is available until 6:00 PM.  This is available to all students in Preschool through 8th grade.

 

Students enrolled in our preschool program can come on the days they are not in class as well.

 Is there a hot lunch program?

 

Yes.  A monthly menu is produced and students can choose the main meal or one of two side sandwiches.  Lunches are $2.75.  For a look at a monthly menu click here.

 Is formal testing done?

 

Yes.  Students in grades 1-8 are tested each year using the Stanford 10 Achievement Tests.  8th grade students also take the ACT Explore Test. 

 

Are there classroom aides?

 

In some grades, yes, when the class size reaches a point when an aide is necessary.

 Do your teachers hold degrees?


Yes, all of our teachers hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education.  Two teachers hold masters decrees in counseling as well.

 What is the maximum size of each class?

 

SLS uses a best practice, common sense, age appropriate approach to class size. In early childhood classes, (Preschool and kindergarten) 20-25 students can be in a classroom, with an aide(s). 

 

In the elementary and middle school the number is 25-30.  When appropriate and aide will be placed in the classroom as well.
